Zenith CH 701
1st Flight: April 4, 2000
Total Time: 804 hrs, as of October 16, 2011.
Engine: Rotax 912ULS...this engine runs smooth & quiet...the liquid cooled cylinder heads make a significant
difference in stabilizing the operating temperature of the engine...the large 'oil cooler' is required.
Performance & Density Altitude: I fly on the Western Slope of Colorado from field elevations of
5,800-8,900 feet. The power of the Rotax 100HP 912S is acceptable with two 160lb persons and 11 gallons
of fuel for a 500 feet a minute climb rate during the fall, winter & spring when the air temperature is at or
below 50 degrees F. In the summer I can fly solo with a 500 feet climb, but if the air temperature is above
60 degrees F, performance is unacceptable for 2 persons while flying in the mountains. The 110HP Turbo
Rotax 914 is recommended for flying at this high density altitude at gross weight.
STOL Flying: With full span leading edge slats and full span flaperons the CH701 is designed for STOL
operations. Remember, maximum performance STOL opertions require POWER. Flaps are UP during takeoff
because the slats combined with elevator vortex generators and full power provide STOL attitudes with climb
performance. Also consider density altitude has a significant effect on performance; hence, recgonize this
variable for the airspeeds and power settings indicated on the next page.
